In the health care world, that's not the case.

Ask a hospital how much it'll cost to have a baby or a hernia surgery in their facility, and they won't be able to tell you.

It's not because they don't want to. It's because every single procedure, from getting stitches to getting an X-ray, has to be run through something called “Medical Billing and Coding.”

It's a set of codes so complex, colleges have built entire majors around it.

Americans also grossly overpay for medication – 50% to 80% morethan Canadians, Australians, and Europeans.

As an example, Australians pay $8 a month for Truvada, an HIV-prevention drug.

Yet Americans pay $2,000 a month for the exact same pills.

And get this, American taxpayers even kicked in $50 million for development costs.

Now, of course, insurance helps. We wouldn't have it if it didn't.

But even 40% of those with insurance can't afford medical care.

Even worse, on top of all this, a quarter of all health care spending is essentially thrown in the trash.

And it happens due to everything from failure of care to over-treatment to fraud and abuse.

A colleague of mine recently witnessed this first-hand…

He went to the ER after being referred there by an urgent care facility.

He was short of breath and had a fever. Pretty basic symptoms.

It turns out he had a mild case of bronchitis.

Yet, during his hospital stay – which lasted eight hours – they put him through a battery of tests including a CAT scan.

Meanwhile, they could have diagnosed him with a stethoscope and a quick X-ray.

So the blood test they ran? $1,500 down the drain.

And the CAT scan? $3,000 wasted.
